Ed Napke (MD, D PH)
Joined the Canadian Food and Drug Directorate in 1963, as one of two medical officers responsible for the medical review of investigative new drug submissions from the pharmaceutical industry.
1965 - 1990: Initiated, developed and expanded the Canadian Drug Adverse Reaction Reporting Program, including selling, promoting and inducing voluntary reporting from all health professionals and agencies. Integrated this program with the National Poison Control Program and various other adverse reaction reporting programs such as those for vaccines and veterinary medicines.
In 1976, as President of the Non-Smokers Association, an advocacy organisation, brought in the "Non-Smoking in Public Places By-laws" in Ottawa, Canada - believed to be the first city to do so in the world.
Dr Napke believes adverse reactions due to medicines, foods, vaccines etc. are public health issues, many of which are due to "excipients and additives" therein.
Since 1990, he has been a volunteer consultant to the UMC, reviewing the results of the regular computerised screenings of ADR reports within the System Organ Classes of psychiatric disorders, respiratory system disorders and resistance mechanism disorders.
